American Standard Designer a Finalist in Prestigious INDEX: Awards
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 15, 2015) ― Gabriela Ravassa, industrial designer at American Standard Brands, was named a finalist in the prestigious INDEX: Awards for Coco, her new, ergonomic design concept for a coffee picking container.
The prestigious INDEX: Awards are held biennially in Denmark to recognize design concepts that address challenges around the world. With a theme of “Design to Improve Life,” the INDEX: Awards select one winner in each of five categories: Body, Home, Work, Play and Learning & Community. Ravassa’s design was selected as a finalist in the “Work” category from over 1,100 entries.
In addition, Ravassa was one of 10 finalists selected to work with Boston Consulting Group, a global management consulting firm with 82 offices in 46 countries. Together they will further develop Coco’s business plan and model, with the goal of pitching the invention to product investors.
Designed by Ravassa, Coco is intended to replace the current picking containers used worldwide. This product accommodates traditional picking techniques while adding new features such as an ergonomic shape that eliminates bruising and a re-designed handle that facilitates grip and limits accidental bean spillage. For additional comfort, the bucket also incorporates a waist strap kidney belt to reduce lifting stress and an easy-to-use custom clasping system that minimizes the risk of injury.
While the design focuses specifically on improving the safety, comfort and efficiency of coffee pickers, Coco has the potential to impact all stakeholders in the production of coffee. When working conditions for pickers are improved and their work can be more efficient, the economic prospects of growers can improve as well.
“Gabriela is an innovative thinker with a demonstrated passion for improving the lives of people around the world,” said Jean-Jacques L’Henaff, vice president of design at American Standard Brands. “We believe there is great value in producing socially-conscious products like Coco, and all of us at American Standard are incredibly proud of Gabriela’s achievements.”
Coco is currently in product development, and will be field tested and further refined before becoming available to coffee growers around the world.
