American Standard Donates Hundreds of Thousands of Toilet Systems to Bangladesh

Nov 20, 2013

PHILADELPHIA, GREENBUILD (November 20, 2013) ― On the 12th annual World Toilet Day — and the first officially recognized by the United Nations — American Standard celebrates the toilet with a progress report on its Flush For Good campaign.

American Standard is donating almost a half million life-improving SaTo sanitary toilet pans throughout Bangladesh.

The donations are expected to improve the lives of 2.5 million residents of Bangladesh during 2013 and 2014. Installations underway will be complete by the end of 2014. American Standard is executing the program with partners BRAC, WaterAid and Save the Children.

Including a new initiative underway for Sub-Saharan Africa, American Standard expects to provide sanitation solutions for a total of 5.5 million people by 2017.

The goal of World Toilet Day is to raise awareness about this critical global health issue and to support the organizations working to create change. Nearly 40 percent of the world population ― that’s 2.5 billion people ― lacks access to safe sanitation. Every day, 2,000 children die from diseases caused by this lack of proper sanitation.

This year marks the first time that November 19th was officially designated World Toilet Day by the United Nations General Assembly.  American Standard is celebrating this recognition by serving as an official sponsor of the WASH United Celebrate the Toilet Campaign today.

The Flush For Good initiative provides a SaTo donation from American Standard for each of its award-winning Champion toilets sold in the U.S. and Canada in 2013. The same advanced R&D expertise behind the Champion toilet’s top flushing performance enabled the development of SaTo and supports the current work underway for a Sub-Saharan Africa solution.
